When considering campfire recipes for kids, simple is always better. The basics work quite well like hot dogs and smores but there are many other recipes to consider.

Hot Dogs Wrapped in Dough

You can create your own “corndog” by taking some pre-made biscuit dough adding the called for amount of water and wrapping a hot dog that has already been placed on a stick with the dough. Be careful not to place the dough too thick otherwise it will not cook through. Cook until golden brown over the fire and service with mustard or ketchup.

Meatballs

I have one child that is VERY picky but loves meatballs. Why not either purchase pre-cooked or make your own meatballs, be sure to cook them thoroughly before your camping trip and re-heat in foil packets that you tuck into the hot coals. You could even add sliced potatoes, carrots and add your choice of seasoning to make this a complete meal.

Grilled Sandwiches

With a pie iron you can make any type of grilled sandwich your imagination can come up with. Grilled cheese, turkey and cheese, ham and cheese, even a pizza sandwich! And most kids are perfectly content with just a regular ‘ole sandwichs while camping so be sure to bring along the peanut butter and jelly for times when the kids are hungry and the fire is out.

Waffles

Waffles are such a versatile food and can be included in your camping trip foods. A waffle iron will allow you to cook your waffles over the campfire. My kids (bless their hearts) do not like eggs but will devour waffles so having the ability to cook waffles over a campfire is great.

Eggs

Eggs aren’t just for breakfast and if you’ve got kids who love scrambled eggs, you can scramble eggs with your choice of other ingredients, take a plastic ziploc type bags, oil the inside of the bag, add your ingredients, squish the bag and then drop it into a pot of boiling water. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until the eggs have set. The best part – no clean up!

If you are looking for even more ideas for campfire recipes for kids you might want to purchase Camp Recipes for Kids.

There are many things that attract people to camping holidays. One of the most transparent attractions is that they offer the opportunity to be closer to nature. You can see this in many ways. At its most basic, this is all about spending more time outdoors.

Specifically, you’ll be sleeping under canvas and without the protection from the elements that you would have in your own home. Some people certainly see this as something of a challenge. You will also, of course, probably be cooking without the array of equipment that you would have available at home.

This is because you could not be expected to pack the full range of cooking utensils that you are used to using in your own kitchen. Most of us don’t have enough room in the car to pack our gas oven, for example. That means that cooking on a camping trip has its own challenges.

For many of us, rising to these challenges is part of the fun. We can’t cook all of the meals that we would be able to produce back home, so we need to think about alternatives. Often, this will mean cooking using a barbecue or other open fire. This needn’t be a disadvantage in itself. In fact, you may well find that you’re able to produce some really tasty dishes in this way.

There’s an added informality to meals cooked around the campfire, although many people do like to bring along their own seating equipment. This may take the form of a basic fold up chair, but it’s also possible to look at more luxurious options.

There’s been a great growth in the number of manufacturers producing camping equipment. As a result of these developments, you can now buy a range of products that are perfect when you’re dining outdoors. Specifically, modern camping tables provide a great new option.

You may wish to eat using nothing more than your fingers, but don’t forget that you can also purchase lightweight cutlery that is perfect for the task of eating outside. Campsite meals may be different, but there’s no reason why they should not be highly enjoyable.

1. Easy and quick to prepare.

2. Requires only a few ingredients and

3. Those ingredients are easy to store at camp (not prone to spilling, spoiling, space-hogging).

Here is our family’s 4-Day Camping menu plan. We have tweaked it over the years and I’m sure you will tweak it some more for your family’s style and needs.

4-Day Camping Food Menu Plan

1st Night: Lloyds BBQ Ribs, corn, coleslaw and potato salad

Wrap ribs in heavy-duty foil, heat, open a can of corn and serve with ready-made coleslaw and potato salad. First night is celebration night. You’ve put up the tent, you’ve build a campfire, you’ve unpacked your gear. So kick back and relax. By the way, Costco is my favorite place to get a big tub of potato salad and coleslaw.

DAY 1 ==========

Breakfast: Blueberry Pancakes, sausage and eggs

Lunch: Chili dog and leftover coleslaw/potato salad

Dinner: Grilled marinated steak tips, baked potatoes & camping onions. If no grill: Easy Pork Chops and bread rolls

Dessert: S’mores

DAY 2 ==========

Breakfast: Cereal and fruit, corny cakes

Lunch: Tortellini and tomato sauce

Dinner: Meat loaf sandwich & Italian Wedding Soup (canned)

Dessert: Mini Camping Pies

DAY 3 ==========

Breakfast: French Toast, sausage and eggs

Lunch: Chowder in bread bowl or grill burgers and hot dogs

Dinner: Ham, beans and baked sweet potatoes

Dessert: Peach Mallows

DAY 4 ==========

Breakfast: Pancakes, sausage and eggs

Lunch: Foil-wrapped Surprise (Whatever’s left in camp kitchen)

Do we stick religiously to this menu plan? Of course not. But being prepared gives me the freedom to be more creative and flexible.

The recipes are pretty easy to guess. If you need the camping recipes, tips and shortcuts for this 4-day family camping menu, email us at camping_menu@aweber.com and it will be sent out to you automatically.

The menu does require a camping stove. If you don’t own a camping stove, watch our video on the 4 criteria to look for in a camping stove at www.joyofcamping.tv

They are two completely different ways to travel, but each offers tangible benefits. In this section we will discuss the many benefits of going camping. The camping is the best way to recover from the stress of winter work. The camp is in fact the ideal holiday to resume contact with nature, breathe clean air, get free of smog accumulated during the long winter months. The authentic contact with nature, sleeping only a few inches from the ground, walking among the trees and some minor mishaps are the best to break the daily routine. Break with tradition and return to a more natural pace, more savage, helps to recharge and return to work full of energy and will to work. Obviously one must leave well-equipped with camping tents, sleeping bags, stakes, rubber hammer, mattresses and everything else can serve. And one should not think that sleeping outdoors at night means suffer the cold because modern sleeping bags are made to keep warm up even at 0 °, depending on the model of course.

Here are some tips to relax the best in camping. Do not forget the air mattress, which allows you to vary at will the hardness of the mattress to adapt to the progressive relaxation of the body during the holiday. The tent should not be placed at a point exposed and east to avoid the sun at dawn warms too much, ruining the final hours of sleep. Before leaving, check the news of civil protection to avoid hitting some risky places. Check at least a few days before if in the area where you want to go are present camping or picnic areas, however, usually they are found in every tourist destination, but are in areas outside the cities and towns.

the camp, thanks to abundant energy exchange between the environment and body, allows you to adjust the metabolic levels and report back in line with the demand of the physical. To improve the welfare of the body you must follow the circadian rhythms of nature, falling asleep at sunset and waking up with the sun. The alimentation must be as natural and “wild” as possible, with an extensive use of local and seasonal fruits, raw vegetables (them too local and in season) and some grilled fresh fish (even cooked with the stick). With this “return to origin” the body finds new energy thanks to the synchronicity between internal rhythms and external environment that reduces the physical and psychological stress caused by city life, work and pressing artificial light.

Walking in wooded areas complete the “care of nature” by simulating the long journey that our ancestors – about 20,000 years ago – make every day to obtain food, the water and return to their refuge. In short, natural living is fun and adventurous, disrupts daily rhythms and may let you find peace, prosperity and security. And what is more important, it is an economic experience and suitable for all ages. To bring some of these benefits also in town, or for those who do not want to try this wonderful adventure, you can think of buying a gazebo to be placed in the garden, and thus try to live a bit in the nature even when at home.

My mother has been trying to get me to use cast iron skillets for years. It always seemed so old fashion to me. I was more interested in some of the more modern cookware. Recently, an article about the benefits of cooking with cast iron caught my attention and I began to realize what my mother had been talking about.

One of the things I discovered is that this cookware has been around for many years; it is also a top choice for many professionals in the culinary industry. The reason this cookware is so popular is because it has the ability to withstand and maintain very high temperatures, which makes it an excellent choice for searing or frying foods. Besides being an ideal heat conductor, cast iron heats evenly and consistently (this means no hot spots). When properly seasoned it will develop a nonstick surface. This makes cast iron a great choice for fat free cooking.

Another great thing about this cookware is its versatility. You can start cooking on the stovetop and finish in the oven and that's not all; you can also use it by the campfire. How great is that? So whether you are frying chicken, baking corn bread or biscuits, or cooking beans by a campfire, this cookware would be a great addition to any kitchen. Once it is seasoned properly, you and your family will enjoy cooking many meals together. It is easy to clean and durable enough to last a lifetime. Mom was right, it does have a lot more benefits than I could ever have imagined! I guess its true what they say, “Mom really does know best!”

Ah, there's nothing like waking up in the wilderness, with the smells and sounds of bacon sizzling over a campfire. But if you're the bread winner and provider of the family, nothing will wake you from your sound sleep except the sound of your hungry family, begging to be fed. Not to worry, with these easy campfire cooking recipes, it will be a breeze, and soon you'll be sizzling with success.

*Smoky Bacon Wraps

1 lb bacon
16 oz mini smoked sausage links
1 cup brown sugar

Directions: Cut bacon strips in half. Wrap each mini-sausage link in a strip of bacon. Spread brown sugar over the bacon/sausage pieces. Place in foil-lined cast iron cooking skillet, dutch oven, or a heavy baking pan if you don't have any cast iron pots. Place on hot coals and cook for 30-40 minutes. (If you're making this recipe in an oven, bake at 400 degrees for the same amount of time).

*Ham and Hashbrown Casserole

2 lbs frozen hashbrowns, thawed
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 cup melted butter
16 oz sour cream
2 cups cubed ham
1/2 tsp pepper
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup butter, melted

Directions: Combine all ingredients except cheese. Mix well. Place in foil-lined heavy baking dish or dutch oven. Sprinkle cheese on top, and depending on how hot the campfire is, cook until hot and bubbly (approximately one hour).

Of course, you can always simply cook up bacon and eggs, and it will be much appreciated without making a big fuss, but your family will love you for going the extra mile. The right campfire cooking recipes will add variation to plain and simple recipes, and once you master the skill of fire cooking, you're good to go.

For the vegetable lovers in your group, you can't go wrong with throwing some vegetables on the fire, any time of day. Corn on the cob is a campfire favorite, though for some it doesn't go down good for breakfast. But you can always whip up an omelet, adding celery and carrots and salt and pepper to taste. Other good breakfast vegetables include red and green peppers and onions.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to cooking over a fire, other than making sure to carefully watch the food as it cooks, and making sure it's not scorching. You might also have to move the pot or pan frequently, to ensure it is evenly cooking.

For those of you who have Pudgy Pie makers, you can dazzle your happy campers with a nice breakfast dessert. No recipe is necessary to do this, simply place 2 slices of bread inside, and some of your favorite fruit pie filling in the middle. You can always drizzle some frosting or powdered sugar over the top to sweeten the deal. Hmmm!
